Accused carjacker refused bail: court

Maitland courthouse. A MAN accused of carjacking a teenager at gunpoint in a University of Newcastle car park last month has been refused bail.

Isaac Benjamin Jones, 26, appeared in Maitland Local Court on Wednesday charged with a number of serious offences, including aggravated assault with intent to take motor vehicle and damaging property by fire.

He did not enter any pleas or apply for bail and the matter was adjourned to Newcastle Local Court on May 9, where it will be prosecuted by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr Jones was arrestedat a home in Green Hills Avenue atWoodberry on Tuesday morning following an extensive investigation into the alleged daylight carjacking on March 24.

Police said a 19-year-old man was walking to his vehicle, a red Mazda 3 hatchback, about 1.30pm and had just opened the door when he was threatened by a man holding a firearm.
