TweetFacebookWITH three shovels full of dirt and the lordmayoral stamp of approval, work kicked off on the Lume project on Wednesday.

The project will add154 apartments to the harbour waterfront on Honeysuckle Drive, with about 300 workers expected to be on site at the peak of the two-year build.

Canberra-based Doma Group is behind the project.

The firm’s managing director, Jure Domazet, said Newcastle “has been a nice place for us to be”.

The group has picked up a swag of former Hunter Development Corporation land in Honeysuckle.

Doma also owns 35 and 42 Honeysuckle Drive, where itplans to build apartments and a hotel.

Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the council was on track to exceed the value of last year’s development application approvals of about $1 billion.

She said the final figure would be clearer at the end of the financial year.
