Hazard reduction burns scheduled around Hunter this week

NO CAUSE FOR ALARM: Smoke seen at Abermain from Maitland on Thursday.Residents may have spotted smoke around the Hunter on Thursday –but firefighters say it’s no major cause for alarm as they take up favourable weather opportunities to conducthazard reduction.

Thursday’s burn is being completed by National Parks and Wildlife Services atOld Maitland Road, Abermain.

The burn, which began at 10.30am, was progressing nicely in the afternoon,Lower Hunter RFSoperational officerGuyBaddock said.

Mr Baddock said residents could expect to see smoke into the evening on Thursday.

It’s one of several hazard reduction burns planned around the Hunter in April. Operations are also scheduled for Karuah, Medowie, Pokolbin and Black Hill in the next week, weather permitting.

Hazard reduction burns are conducted by firefighters in cooler months to reduce the risk of fires in the bushfire danger period over summer.
