It follows a burn-off conducted in grassland at Eastern View Beach on Thursday, more than 150km from where 22-year-old Muhamed Yucel was shot in the chest in May last year.

The young man was killed while playing computer games in a Keysborough garage, in southeast Melbourne, in what police believed was a case of mistaken identity linked to bikies.

The firearm used in the shooting was later found in grassland around Eastern View Beach, where thick vegetation and undergrowth was burnt away ahead of a scheduled police search on Friday.

“It’s clear that the firearm used to kill Muhamed has been discarded at this location,” Detective Inspector Tim Day told ABC radio on Thursday.

“So we work on the assumption or we ask ourselves the question, ‘has anything else been dumped at this location?'”

The area was searched previously but detectives wanted to double-check they did not miss anything.

They said a a Toyota Corolla was spotted in the area the day after the May 2 shooting, and believed its occupants discarded the used firearm in the scrub.

Another vehicle, a dark-coloured Jeep Cherokee, was thought to be involved in the shooting.

“We believe it to have been a case of mistaken identity and the shots were fired by a gunman at the wrong property on the street,” Insp Day said.
